"A, one of the COVID-19 patients who was in the most critical state isolated in Chonnam National University Hospital has finally been discharged on the 30th day of hospitalization today."
When Prof. Kim Seong-Eun of Infectious Disease Division and also the attending doctor of A announced the news of discharge in Chonnom National University Hospital's Contingency Meeting by COVID-19 Quick Response Team, over 40 participants exclaimed 'Wow' and sent a big round of applause.
It was an act of encouragement for the efforts of medical team who have dedicated day and night for treatment as well as self-congratulation for all those who have done their duty in the front line of the fight against the epidemic.
A, in the 60s, who was transferred from a medical center in Gyeongbuk region on the 2nd last month was in critical condition when A first arrived at the hospital, to the extent that intensive care, such airway intubation and artificial respiration treatment, was necessary and even the medical team was unsure whether the patient's state would be improved.
In particular, on the 5th day of hospitalization, on March 7, it was impossible to provide appropriate oxygen with artificial respirator due to lung lesion progress so ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) was used as a last resort for 1 week.
Prof. Kim Sung-Eun who received a lot of encouragement on this day revealed that "The patient was able to improve thanks to many departments that helped so that timely and accurate treatment could be provided, the passion of nurses and particularly the big assistance from the medical team at the cardiothoracic surgery department."
