About the Dept. of Endocrine Surgery
The Department of Endocrine Surgery began in 1971 with five thyroid operations, the records of which including the patient charts still remain, and surpassed 5,000 cases of surgery in 2005 and 10,000 on April 19, 2010. For 42 years until 2012, a total of 13,329 thyroid operations (incl. thyroid cancer and benign goiter) were performed, making Chonnam National University Hospital the No. 1 national university hospital in Korea having performed the largest number of thyroid operations thus far. With years of experience, the members of the department are capable of treating lateral cervical metastasis, undifferentiated cancer and anaplastic cancer, which are difficult to treat surgically, and carrying out microinvasive resection and endoscopic thyroidectomy. The department deals with both primary and secondary parathyroid diseases and is known for producing excellent cosmetic results by making minimally invasive incisions.
