The Department of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine provides comprehensive rehabilitation therapy such as drug therapy, exercise therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy with the aim of minimizing disability and promoting recovery and enhancement of body functions, based on accurate diagnosis of the neurological, muscular, and/or skeletal condition. The ultimate objective is to improve the optimal quality of life by restoring the original functions of the affected areas of the body.
This area of medicine can be further divided into physical medicine and rehabilitation medicine. Physical medicine concerns treatment for pain rehabilitation for patients experiencing acute and chronic pain due to neurological, muscular, and skeletal diseases as well as rehabilitation from sports injuries.
Conservative treatment, including drug therapy, is administered in physical medicine. As for the rehabilitation of cranial nerves, rehabilitation treatment is provided for adults who have suffered a stroke or brain injury and children with cerebral palsy or developmental disabilities, while the field of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation focuses on maintaining and enhancing the cardiopulmonary function through exercise therapy. As for cognitive rehabilitation, patients with dementia are provided with special cognitive rehabilitation therapy and drug therapy to help restore and improve their cognitive function, and spinal cord injury rehabilitation programs cater to patients with paraplegia or quadriplegia. In addition, prosthesis and orthosis are prescribed and used to complement and enhance physical functions.
