Chonnam National University Hospital has become the first in the region to exceed the 100th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) which is a surgical treatment for aortic stenosis.
Prof. Kim Ju-Hwan's Cardiology team in Chonnam National University Hospital successfully conducted TAVI on a 79-year old male patient on November 2 last year, becoming the first hospital in the provinces to record the 100th surgical treatment.
Aortic stenosis is a disease that obstructs blood flow from heart to body due to narrow aortic valve which plays the role of blocking aorta's blood from flowing back into the left ventricle and it is a disease that causes severe heart complications if symptoms such as dyspnoea, chest pains, fainting and others are not treated for a long period of time.
Previously, it was treated with surgical methods but nowadays, Aortic Valve Implantation which inserts artificial valve through the groin's artery is conducted.
Aortic Valve Implantation  has less financial burden on patients compared to surgeries and the advantage is that recovery is fast after surgical treatment and in the beginning, it was usually conducted on high-risk patient groups but nowadays, its application is gradually being expanded.
Chonnam National University Hospital has conducted 985 Aortic Valve Implantation surgeries until now since its establishment and as for TAVI which is recently gaining attention, it has conducted 100 TAVIs, the most in the provinces.
